The Effect of CaCl2 Foliar Application on Membrane Protein Profiles and Cell Wall Structure of Strawberry Fruits

Abstract
The effects of CaCl©ü on the inorganics, the soluble protein, and the membrane protein content in the fruits of the strawberry, Fragaria grandiflora Ehrn. cv. Yeohong were studied. When 0.5% CaCl©ü solution was sprayed on the leaf at the flowering stage, there were no changes in the K, Ca, and Mg levels of the fruits and in the K, and Mg levels of the leaves. However, there was a significant increase of Ca in the treated leaves. There was no difference in the soluble protein content and protein band patterns of the treated fruit. However, the membrane protein of the treated fruit, which was harvested 30 days after flowering, had a new protein with a molecular weight of approximately 89kD by SDS-PAGE. The transmission electronmicrographs revealed that the cell wall of the treated fruits, which were kept for 12 days at 5¡É, had a distinct middle lamella that was absent in the control.
